The Newfangled Four
The Newfangled Four is a barbershop quartet based in sunny Southern California. Formed in the Fall of 2012 with quartet members Joey Buss – Tenor, Jackson Niebrugge – Lead, Ryan Wisniewski – Baritone, and Jake Tickner – Bass, this foursome quickly bonded through their involvement with the Westminster Chorus and the Masters of Harmony, two world-class choruses in the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS). It didn't take long for this quartet to start building a repertoire of challenging, yet thrilling arrangements.
The very next year, The Newfangled Four won the 2013 International Youth Barbershop Quartet contest and also became 2013 Far Western District Quartet Champions. At the BHS Convention In 2014, they received the Dealer's Choice Award for being the highest scoring debut quartet of the year. The quartet placed 11th at the International in 2016 and this past July they leaped into the elite Top 10 of all quartets in the world – placing 9th in the International Quartet Contest held in Las Vegas, NV. These guys are certainly the next best thing!
Chamber Bravura is an extra-curricular vocal performance organization under the direction of Katherine Girvin. Comprised of 30 vocalists from various middle and high schools in the San Diego area, Chamber Bravura boasts an average age of 13 years old. These talented students perform rigorous choral music through a program of regular rehearsals and concerts. They strive to study and perform challenging and interesting music in a variety of genres.
Since their original performance in Carnegie Hall in 2012, this group was personally invited to perform a Mass in Saint Peter's Basilica in June 2013. These students were also invited back to perform in Carnegie Hall twice in 2014 as part of a national and international choral program. These students performed in Austria and Prague in July of 2014 and returned to Europe in the summer of 2015 to perform a variety of Masses throughout Ireland and Wales. In 2016, Chamber Bravura were featured performers at Deke Sharon's Total Vocal show at Carnegie Hall and they performed at the Disneyland Candlelight Processional during the Holiday season. This past July, Chamber Bravura was honored to tour Australia and New Zealand, representing the United States at the Australian International Music Festival and performing at the world famous Sydney Opera House. The tremendous success of Chamber Bravura continues as the group prepares for upcoming concerts, including a scheduled performance next April under the direction of Eric Whitcare at Lincoln Center.
These students rehearse only once a week after school, proving their dedication and diligence to achieve so much – and sound so good – with minimal group rehearsal. These students have been recognized as the number one middle school a cappella choir in the nation (on multiple occasions) by Heritage Festivals at national competitions.
