About Pacific Coast Harmony
Pacific Coast Harmony is a mixed gender chorus. After 80 years as a male-only organization, the Barbershop Harmony Society recently opened its membership to all, giving traditionally all-male chapters the option to invite anyone to officially join their ranks. La Jolla's own Pacific Coast Harmony has embraced this opportunity, becoming San Diego’s first ever all-inclusive Barbershop Harmony Society's Mixed Chorus! We are proud to be pioneers in the field of mixed barbershop, and excited about our future.
PCH is an award-winning a cappella ensemble specializing in the unique, Barbershop Harmony art form. We are one of over 900 active chapters worldwide in the Barbershop Harmony Society. PCH sings music that spans the Great American Songbook, Broadway theater and film, popular traditional pieces, and beyond.
PCH is uniquely composed of dedicated singers – all volunteers – who strive together with a common goal of musical excellence. PCH members enjoy the thrill of singing harmony and bringing the joy of vocal music to enthusiastic audiences of all ages!
Provide a compelling, fun, and community-enriching experience for quality singers as one of the top mixed choruses in the Barbershop Harmony Society.
Our Director, Bonnie McKibben
Born in Santa Monica, this California native has always been surrounded by music. Her Grandfather was an opera singer, her father played piano and sang with Big Bands, and she was encouraged to express herself through music. She was given a guitar at a very young age, and soon after began playing and singing in clubs throughout the south land. Her luck was to sing for a producer that showed up one evening, and the rest, as they say, is history. She recorded her first album at the age of 17 and was on the top 10 in Billboard’s Tip Sheet, right above David Bowie.
Also early on, she began singing barbershop…at the tender age of 14.
When she decided to leave club singing and recording, she went back to barbershop. And has been there ever since. She has garnered dozens of medals directing choruses, and singing in quartets in both lead and bass, including winning the coveted title of International Quartet Champion with Panache in 1990 singing bass. Panache went on to record four albums, traveled extensively and collected some fabulous memories, such as singing for a delighted President Ronald Regan for his 80th birthday, and singing before 77,000 people at an NFL game.
In addition to directing Pacific Coast Harmony, Bonnie directs a Sweet Adeline Chorus, OC Sound out of Laguna Hills. She also sings in a Jazz Quartet, The Romantics, and sings lead in a rock band, The RetroFits.
Pacific Coast Harmony has a very active youth in harmony program in conjunction with the International Society as well as other chapters in the San Diego area. To learn more, click here
